THE NAVY saw atomic energy as a way to improve the ability of its submarines, surface ships, and aircraft to control the seas and to project naval power ashore. It joined forces with American industry and the scientific community to develop a host of emerging technologies, including nuclear propulsion and weaponry, computers, satellites, navigation devices, and missiles.
